Johann Franz Hilgert’s (as yet unconfirmed) grandparents were Johann Caspar Hilgert (1665–1735) and Anna Christina Kahns (1665–1725) of Oberwesal. His parents are reported to have been Johann Wendel Hilgert (21 May 1689-9 Dec 1722) and Maria Margaretha Maus, daughter of Johann Wilhelm Maus and Maria Ursala Melchers of Simmen.

Argenstein is a village on the western bank of the Lahn. To the west is the Par-Allna and to the northeast is the Allna. Its history is tied to the broader Rhineland-Palatinate region

The Palatinate was situated west of the Rhine and north of the French (Alsatian) border. The present state of Rheinland-Pfalz consists of the Palatinate and parts of the Rhineland. .

In 1531 Argentine is called a village for a first time. In the 16th century, Argenstein consisted mainly of a mill and a few houses. The most important sight is the Nehmühle on the Lahn, which was first mentioned in 1332.

Johann Frantz Hilgert was born on 01 Feb 1721 in Argenstein, in the district of Simmen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Times were tough in this small village, and his parents and grandparents all appear to have passed away. I am sure Johann Frantz struggled to find the finances to be able to leave for America. While 1751 was not the peak of Palatine emigration, it was still a period of ongoing movement from the Rhenish Palatinate and Saarland, driven by the long shadow of war, economic hardship, and the lure of religious and economic opportunity abroad.

Johan Frantz left the town of Argental in the District of Simmern, He received manumission from serfdom on March 15, 1751. For this he had to pay 40.

Johann Frantz Hilgert immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in Sep 1751 (Ship Edinburgh). Oath of Allegiance: 16 Sep 1751 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Master of The Edinburgh was James Russell.

There is no record of his trip but for most of the travelers, the conditions on the ships were abysmal. They were overcrowded, full of illness and danger. There was no privacy, the drinking water was polluted, and the food was vermin-ridden. The 6 to 8 week crossing was completely dependent on the weather.

Johan took the Oath of Allegiance to the King at the courthouse in Philadelphia. Present were the Worshipful, the Mayor, Joshua Maddox, Esqr. and the other foreigners who took the oath “At the courthouse in Philadelphia, on Monday, the 16th September 1751. Present: The Worshipful, the Mayor, Joshua Maddox, Esqr. The Foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the Edinburgh, James Russell, Master, did this

We Subscribers, Natives and Late Inhabitants of the Palatinate upon the Rhine & Places adjacent, having transported ourselves and Families into this Province of Pensilvania, a Colony subject to the Crown of Great Britain, in hopes and Expectation of finding a Retreat & peaceable Settlement therein, Do Solemnly promise & Engage, that We will be faithful & bear true Allegiance to his present MAJESTY KING GEORGE THE SECOND, and his Successors, Kings of Great Britain, and will be faithful to the Proprietor of this Province; And that we will demean ourselves peaceably to all His said Majesties Subjects, and strictly observe & conform to the Laws of England and of this Province, to the utmost of our Power and best of our understanding.”

Many of the passengers arrived knowing they would be sold into an indenture. This doesn’t appear to be true for Johan Frantz Hilgert. He married shortly after arrival and took up land.

He settled in Centerville, Upper Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

He married Anna Christina between 1751–1753. (The Palatinate Project gives his marriage as Oct. 1751 in Centerville.)

Anna Christina Mani, daughter of Hans Jacob Mani and Anna Maria Werli is listed as his wife, but I have never seen any proof of this.)

Anna Christina Mani was born on 07 May 1724 in Altweiler, Now Bas-Rhin, France. She died on 09 Jun 1797 in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania Her family had been in Northampton County for about 10 years, having arrived in Philadelphia in 1741.

In 1772, he appears as a farmer who paid 1.12.0 pounds tax on his property in Williams township,

Northampton County, PA., south of Easton, Pennsylvania before Justice of the Peace, Judge Benjamin Deputy, he signed the Oath declaring his allegiance to the support of war against England.

During the American Revolution, he served in the Northampton County, Pennsylvania.  One record shows him as Inactive Duty Militia, in the 4th Battalion of the 6th Company, under the Lieutenancy of Lancaster. His descendants have qualified for both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution.

In 1781, he paid 3.10 pounds in taxes in Mt. Bethel township.

He lived in Mount Bethel Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1786 near Centerville formerly Stone Church).

In 1789, he again paid taxes in Upper Mount Bethel Township.

The 1790 United States Federal Census enumerates him as Francis Hilyard, living in Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton, Pennsylvania. It appears that he and Anna Christina are living alone.

Frantz wrote his will on 16 May 1796.

Christina died 9 June 1797 at the age of 73 and was buried at Stone Church, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Trinity United Church of Christ). Her gravestone reads: "Hier ruhet der leib Christina Hilgertin Sie war geboren den 7 Ma..." and the rest is buried in the ground. The translation is: Here lies the corpse of Christina Hilgert She was born on May 7...

Johannes Frantz Hilliard died at age 75 on 19 August 1797. Add photos of tombstones.

He was buried beside Christina at Stone Church in the Lower Section Row 4 Grave 8. His tombstone reads:

"Hier ruhet der leib Van Johann Franz Hilgert Er ward zur welt geboren den 1st February 1722

Ist gestorben den 19 August 1797 Alter 75y 6m 4t (Here lies the body of Van Johann Franz Hilgert He was born into this world February 1, 1722 and died August 19, 1797. 75 years 6 months and 4 days)
